Performance: Present Music’s “The City Without Jews”

Oct 29, 2023 @ 6:00 pm

Windhover Hall

Extend your experience of the exhibition Art, Life, Legacy: Northern European Paintings in the Collection of Isabel and Alfred Bader with a concert featuring the 1924 silent film Die Stadt ohne Juden (The City Without Jews) by Austrian filmmaker H. K. Breslauer. Premiering the year of Alfred Bader’s birth in Vienna, the film is a biting satire and political critique of the era’s ferocious antisemitism. Present Music will perform the film score by Olga Neuwirth. The program also includes Israeli composer Aviya Kopelman’s arrangement of “Gonna Get Through This World.”

Arrive before the performance to attend the preconcert panel moderated by Amy Shapiro, professor emerita of Philosophy and Women’s & Gender Studies at Alverno College. Panelists include Yaniv Dinur, music director of the New Bedford Symphony Orchestra, former resident conductor of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra; and winner of the 2019 Sir Georg Solti Conducting Fellow Award; David Luhrssen, film critic at Shepherd Express and author of Hammer of the Gods: Thule Society and Birth of Nazism; and Lisa Silverman, professor of History and Jewish Studies at UW–Milwaukee and author of Becoming Austrians: Jews and Culture between the World Wars;
